New Jersey Fire Museum
and Fallen Firefighter Memorial

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Who is the “New Jersey Fire Museum and Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial”
A group of volunteers who share an interest in seeing the New Jersey fire engine museum
become reality. The name has changed over time. The formal legal title of our 501 C 3
non-profit organization is the “New Jersey Fire Engine & Equipment Museum at Allaire
Inc.”. We now use the above title which emphasizes the memorial and museum. The
organization consists of a Board of Directors, an Executive Committee (drawn from the
Board of Directors) a Volunteer Committee and a Memorial Committee. Four members
of the Board of Directors also serve as Officers of the non-profit corporation.

The museum will have a Memorandum of Understanding with the NJ Department of
Environmental Protection, Division of Parks and Forestry, which is accountable for
oversight of construction on state-owned property. The museum non-profit corporation
will take custody of the facility upon completion and be responsible for managing the
annual operating budget process, fund raising and daily operations. Individual citizens
may volunteer to serve as advisor/escorts for visitors and to participate in restoration shop
activities and the operation of museum-owned apparatus on special occasions.

Q: Where will it be located and when will it open?
The museum will be located on Atlantic Avenue, Route 524, Wall Township, across the
street from Allaire State Park in Monmouth County. This location is central to the state
and easily accessible from Exit 98 of the Garden State Parkway or Exit 34B of I-195.
Allaire State Park is best known for historic Allaire Village and the Pine Creek narrow
gauge operating railroad. The immediate area includes the Jersey Shore oceanfront
providing a variety of year round recreational activities enjoyed by groups of all ages.
Museum construction and the opening date are dependent upon fund-raising success.
Currently the best estimate for an opening date is 2009.

Q: What will it look like?
The planned main facility will be approximately 34,000 square feet and comprised of
permanent and rotating exhibits, a children's safety adventure learning center, a
theater/lecture hall, an educator and fire service resource center, multi-purpose/banquet
room and gift shop. Phase One anticipates a building of 10,000 square feet.
The Memorial Plaza will host the New Jersey Fallen Firefighter's Memorial honoring
those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Adjacent to the main facility, a meadow will be used for display, field day events and
antique fire apparatus musters. Picnic groves and a playground will be located adjacent to
the main facility.

Phase II will complete the planned major construction including the Great NJ Fire Barn,
providing garage display space for many fire apparatus on long-term loan to the museum
from owning fire departments and individuals. The Great Fire Barn will also house
displays telling the story of great fires and disasters of New Jersey.

At the rear of the property will be the restoration and repair shops which will allow
viewing and tours of work- in-progress for apparatus and artifact restoration work.
The state-owned collection (Ernie Day collection) currently includes over 400 artifacts
with more than 30 hand-drawn, horse-drawn and motorized fire apparatus. The non-profit
owns a number of motor apparatus that have been donated to the museum project in
addition to the equipment owned by the state. The collection is expected to grow
considerably when the museum actively solicits equipment and artifact donation.

The NJ Family Fire Safety program will address a full range of home safety issues,
including fire, electrical, water, chemical, inhalant and hazardous materials in a "handson"
manner! This program will reside as a gallery within the museum and eventually as a
community outreach program operating from a museum-owned tractor trailer.

Q: Who will pay for it?
The museum will be financed through a private/public partnership. This means we seek
both state funds to fulfill the state’s obligation to erect a museum while we also pursue
private funding from benefactors and corporations to operate the programs and maintain
the exhibits and displays contained within as well as the community outreach programs.
Museum memberships are offered for individuals, families and organizations.
An admission fee will be charged (at a reduced rate for those with museum membership).
Memorial Paver Campaign offers standard and large size memorial pavers
personalized with donor information. Paver funds are held exclusively for the Fallen
Firefighter Memorial.

Corporate Capital Campaign is directed to businesses, corporations and
benefactors. There are options for support at a variety of levels. Interested parties may
